“How apartheid was finally buried, without requiem; but in
joyous celebration, will remain forever in the hearts and minds
of a nation reborn. When tears came, and there was dampness in
the eyes of even the most stern, it was for putting the past in
the past and hoping for hope in the future.”

As the sun rose over Cape Town on Tuesday and a new era dawned, people began streaming in their thousands to the Grand Parade.

They waited for hours in the sun to hear South Africa’s first democratically elected President, Mr Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, speak.

As the parade filled up, people moved onto the station roof, on top of bus shelters, onto the Golden Acre parking lot, some even crowding onto the Standard Bank roof to the Foreshore – nobody wanted to miss the historic address.
